Welcome to the crazy world of ER nursing. The stories that come out of the ER can make you laugh, make you cry, and make you pissed. Sometimes all at the same time. ER RN's are a special breed and I do believe we all lean a little bit toward the insane side of reality. Come in, kick up your feet, and prepare to be astounded by what your fellow humans do.
excellent! i like to drag the students into the room and get them to help with compressions. helps them decide if they have made the right career choice....
Candice - not really. She actually did pretty good. After I yelled at her twice to quit staring at the dead dude, put her hands on his chest, and push damn it! push!

Kristen - oh, just about.......nothing. Thankfully the dude was already dead when he got to us really. We had a nursing student, an EMT student, a med student, and a Resident. Oh - and a surgeon (why? I'm still wondering that too.) PLUS the doc, charge nurse (me), and my 2nd nurse. Too many damn cooks in the kitchen. I had to kick some people out. Then I was told I "had an attitude" with the docs I kicked out. I told 'em to kiss it.
I have been a nurse for 25 years, I've done it all.And I have wanted to be a nurse all my life, but I was restless. I have been in Oncology (4 years),Surgery (20 years) PRN (as needed) - Med Surg,Extended care, MD Office. But for three weeks I have been in ER orienting and it's the first time in years I have wanted to learn new things not just a new drug,or a new procedure. My co workers are crazy, rude to me,not suporting, fight each other and I have to fight for bits of information.Still I want it as bad as that letter in the mail that sad "you have been accepted into nursing school. When a patient is there they seem to smell it, come to life and become a well oiled machine. It's wonderful.

As a student nurse, I will say that that is my worst nightmare.

I did CPR my very first day of clinical. Once I got past all the little old lady's ribs popping off her sternum, I was good.
